14 Days - The Lure of the Eastern Himalayas
Season : November to June
Best time : February to April
Explore the rural alpine paradises of Garhwal and Kumaon and retrace the steps of legendary hunter Jim Corbett.
'Mountain and valley, forest and alp, birds and animals, butterflies and flowers, all combine to make a sum of delight unsurpassed elsewhere; Garhwal and Kumaon present the gentler face of the Himalayas, and these words of Longstaff's, arguably the greatest of all Himalayan explorers, perfectly capture the enchanting beauty of this region. It is here that the holiest of Indian rivers, the Ganges, has its source, and this place that is steeped in the myths of Hinduism. From Delhi you head north across the plains, then up through the Himalayan foothills to explore the sacred Hindu pilgrimage site of Rishikesh, where you stay outside the town in a delightful hotel on the banks of the River Ganges. Continuing east to Corbett for three spectacular days of game viewing in India's most famous national park and a day's nature walk on the trail of the Man eater of Mohan, you then head north through the densely forested river valleys via Kaladhungi, where you can visit Corbett's winter home, now a museum, to the secluded resort hotel of Kalmatia Sangam with its superb views of the mountains and excellent nature trails. From here you can take a day excursion to the lakeside town of Nainital, another favoured colonial retreat and still quintessentially British.
